On a picturesque Saturday afternoon at Rat Park, East's 2nd Colts pulled off one of the most dramatic wins of the season. Suddenly, Frederick Snary’s name is being mentioned alongside drop-goal greats like Jonny Wilkinson, Ronan O’Gara, and even the likes of cult hero Matt Dunning.
In a nail-biting clash against Warringah, with the scoreboard locked at 24-25 and time slipping away, the young Englishman stepped into the pocket, called for the ball, and slotted a walk-off drop goal from 20 metres out.
The result?
Pandemonium.
East’s 27, Warringah 25. A statement win, and a moment that will be talked about for years to come. For Snary, who only joined the club at the start of the 2025 pre-season after moving from the UK, it was a dream come true.
“Honestly, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he said of his move to Woollahra. “The culture here is unreal, everyone backs each other, on and off the field. My favourite part has to be the brotherhood. We train hard, we play harder, but most importantly, we look out for each other.”
That sense of unity was on full display in the frantic final moments against Warringah. Easts hammered away phase after phase, inching their way into the middle of the field. With the clock in the red, Snary found himself in position. “Mate, the moment was surreal,” he said.
“We’d run through a scenario mid-week at training just in case a drop goal was needed. I was sitting in the pocket for a few phases, knowing I was going to go for it, just waiting for the call from the coaches on the sideline. But when the moment arrived, I thought, Why not. I called for the ball from Darcy, and it just sat up perfectly. As soon as it left my boot, I had a good feeling. It felt sweet. Then I saw it sailing through the posts, and I just lost it. One of those moments you dream about as a young kid.”
The celebrations matched the moment. East's players poured in from all corners of the field, swarming Snary in a frenzy of joy. “The celebrations were unreal, it was chaos in the best way possible,” Snary recalled with a grin. “Everyone just sprinted in, jumping on each other, screaming, hugging. The energy was electric. You could feel how much it meant to the boys, especially after how hard we’ve been working.”
This win was another building block in the team’s campaign as they opened the bandwagon doors to all Beasties faithful. The 2s Colts, once seen as outsiders in this year’s premiership race, are now brushing off their “Smokey” tag and looking more like genuine contenders with every game. Snary himself racked up 10 points in the match, underlining his growing influence on the team.
“It means a lot, honestly,” he said of his role in this side. “This team has been building something special. Being able to play a role in that and help the boys keep pushing forward is something I’m proud of. In the last couple of games, we’ve faced must-win situations and handled the pressure. Week by week, we’ve shown what we’re capable of. The belief in the group is immense, and there’s a real sense that we can go all the way if we keep working hard. I know we have what it takes.”
That belief will be tested again this Saturday, when Easts face Sydney Uni in what promises to be another do-or-die clash. But if Snary’s boot and Easts’ resilience are anything to go by, it would be foolish to count them out.
At Rat Park, one kick changed everything. A Smokey no more, the 2s Colts are marching towards September with the kind of confidence that only a last-minute marvel can deliver.
