At Eastern Suburbs Rugby, we’re proud not only of what our players achieve on the field, but also of the impact many of them make in the community. One of the most rewarding partnerships we’ve developed in recent years is with Giant Steps Sydney, an organisation dedicated to supporting children and adults with autism through education, therapy and meaningful life-skills programs.
For several Easts players, Giant Steps has become far more than a workplace. It’s a place where they’ve grown as people, discovered new strengths, and contributed to an environment built on compassion, teamwork, and purpose.

Ethan Simpson describes his experience at Giant Steps as transformational, both personally and professionally. “Working at GS has provided me with a new type of challenge. I feel less as just another worker but more as part of a team that’s working towards something with purpose. Each day is different and comes with a variety of experiences. It’s greatly benefited my overall wellbeing and mood. It has allowed me to step up into a new type of leadership role and given me more responsibilities. It has made life while playing rugby and training a lot easier. I am not always tired or sore so I can put more effort into rugby.”
For younger players, the organisation provides rare opportunities for growth. Charlie O’Kane joined the Adult Autism Services team straight out of school and has already gained invaluable skills. “I have learned a wide variety of skills when it comes to supporting people with disabilities—effective communication, teamwork, and personal care skills. I came to this job as an 18-year-old fresh out of school and the amount of support I received from other workers and team leaders made me feel very comfortable. The skills I have learned have helped me give our participants the best chance at being as independent as possible to ultimately improve their quality of life.”

Rob Cobb also speaks highly of the culture of support that allows him to balance meaningful work with his rugby commitments. “Giant Steps provides me with extremely fulfilling work and a great team environment. On top of this, they fully support me and my rugby endeavours at Easts, giving me the flexibility to thrive in both areas.”

Giant Steps relies on a combination of NDIS funding, active parent fundraising, corporate sponsorships, donations and grants to continue delivering its programs. The generosity of the community plays a vital role in ensuring the organisation can keep expanding its services and supporting more families.
If you’re in a position to give, we encourage our Easts members, supporters and families to consider donating to Giant Steps. Your contribution directly supports life-changing programs for people with autism.
We also encourage any current Easts players looking for meaningful, flexible work to reach out. Giant Steps offers a supportive environment, professional development, and the chance to make a genuine difference, all while fitting around training and competition schedules.
This partnership continues to be a source of immense pride for our club, and we’re grateful to the players who bring their energy and empathy to Giant Steps every day.
