Grade Match Reports | Round 9 | Easts v Gordon
1st Grade Easts v Gordon L 22 - 42
Our on field time in Orange wasn’t what we had hoped for. After a solid week of prep and a teamlist to get the job done we lacked the execution. Gordon came with a game plan that worked for them and executed it at almost every opportunity. We couldn’t have been more opposite. Even our tries came with issues in the lead up. I want to say sorry to the supporters who travelled to watch us play. Long drive to watch dropped balls and confusion. We will be better this week - we have no choice.
2nd Grade Easts v Gordon L 21 - 23
It was a big match up for the 2’s who were taking on Equal placed Gordon. Easts dominated the 1st half with attack and D but were only able to cross the try line once. Unfortunately a lapse of concentration and some poor decisions in the final 5 mins of the first half allowed Gordon a sniff and they took their opportunities, crossing twice to go to a 12-7 half time lead. The 2nd half was a real arm wrestle with both teams having their chances. Gordon struck first but didn’t convert taking a 17-7 lead and then slotting a penalty to move to 20 -7. Easts hit back about midway through the half to get to 20-14 and were still a real chance of winning. Again, poor decisions let to Easts unable to convert to points. Gordon managed another penalty goal to put them outside of 7 points at 23-14 but easts kept fighting and eventually crossed with 8 minutes to go 23-21. It was game on as easts held the ball and continued to strike, receiving a number of penalties to move them up the field until an injury to Emerson Adcock who had been a driving for the beasties all day. Despite receiving a penalty on the bell, Easts could not retain possession and Gordon sent to ball into touch to end the game. Easts 21-Gordon 23. Opportunity lost!
3rd Grade Easts v Gordon W 33 - 14
A great start saw us up 14-0 after 10mins by simplifying things, being direct and accurate. We got a lot of traction out of pick and drive game scoring both tries from close range. We lost our way after that as we made a couple of mistakes and let Gordon back in. They were particularly clinical with their two opportunities in our 22, scoring tries from both. 14-14 at half time was not where we should have been but our best performance during a 2nd half this year saw us eventually put the result beyond doubt. A return to what had worked well for us in the first half saw us slowly grind Gordon out of the contest. The forwards in particular sealed the deal with some emphatic scrums and a try from a maul being the reward for a lot of hard work over the last month or so. A great result that hopefully kick starts run to the finals.
4th Grade Easts v Gordon Draw 15 - 15
A bit of a disappointing result for the boys. Led with 1 minute to go but Gordon scored but couldn't convert. The final result - a draw. A lot of valuable lessons were learnt however and there is no doubt whatsoever that we are improving with every game and this one was no different. Our defence was super-impressive and brutal.
