Grade Match Reports | Easts v Randwick

Updated: Jul 26, 2019

1st Grade v Randwick W 33 - 24 Pauli Taumpoepeau, Director of Rugby

We got off to a good start, a good enough start to build on throughout the game but then we didn’t. Errors and penalties continue to slow us down as they have in the past few weeks. Core skill error let them in for their 1st try then four penalties allowed them to keep the scoreboard ticking. I was happy enough in the end with our attack. There was some really nice skills on show but I was most pleased with how we defended. Their two tries coming from error when we had possession (and the fact that they were pressuring us). That was an important win for us. Keeps us in the hunt with another massive do or die fixture this weekend against a really good Gordon side at Chatswood. Thanks for your support – to the people who were at the game - you add so much to the experience of the day. Sitting up on the roof it’s a great sight to see you all there cheering and getting into the day. Glad the boys were able to give you something to cheer about.

2nd Grade v Randwick W 20 - 19

Following a disappointing loss to Uni last week the boys were keen to make a statement against the 2nd place wicks team. Having already beaten them at Coogee, the confidence in attack showed from the kick off. Easts regathered the kick off and immediately put Wicks under pressure coming away with 3 points in the opening minutes. Easts dominated the possession early and despite setting up multiple opportunities they could not convert them into points. A mistake in the Wicks half, followed by 2 penalties allowed Randwick into the Easts red zone and eventually a try. Unable to convert, Randwick took a 5-3 lead. Minutes later Easts were again on the attack and eventually crashed over and converted to take a 10-5 lead into the half. Beasties dominated the majority of the 2nd half mostly due to some huge defensive efforts. When they were finally able to gain possession they made wicks pay and stretched to a 20-5 lead. Randwick made a late charge, running in 2 tries in the last 5 mins to make to score 20-19. The last try after time gave Wicks an important bonus point which kept them ahead of easts on the ladder. With 2 games to go, Easts have the hardest run home, facing 1st placed Gordon and then 4th placed Eastwood.

3rd Grade v Randwick W 38 - 35 Steve Shapland

We started like we were still asleep and found ourselves quickly behind 21-0 and looking very much like the 2nd best team on the paddock. However it speaks to the growing patience and belief within the team, that we slowly began to claw our way back into the game by holding onto the ball and letting the forwards go to work. By half time it was back to 21-14 and we were right back in it. We started the 2nd half well too and hit the lead 28-21 and starting to dominate. However a lapse in concentration let Randwick back into the contest and a see saw last 20 ensued that meant we needed a try to win with 5 mins to go. We gave ourselves a few late opportunities without being able to capitilise before the bounce of the ball went our way and the green slime parted to dot down and steal the game! We have knocked off the first placed team each of the last two weeks with a lot of heart and skill. We are still precariously places however and need to keep winning to control our own destiny. Can’t wait till next week.

4th Grade v Randwick W 27 - 10 Stuart Brown

Without doubt our best performance of the season. Eighth vs second and a resounding win. Our defense and decision making was second to none. A brutal forward display backed up by an equally impressive backline which constantly found weaknesses in the opposition line. We will continue to improve and cement our place as the best side in the competition.
